We are pleased to announce that The Rt Hon Cheryl Gillan MP for Amersham and Chesham has been appointed as our new President.

Mrs Gillan was formally elected at the CPRE Bucks AGM on Saturday 5 November 2016 where she gave a keynote address and was welcomed into her new role.

Press release from Rt Hon Cheryl Gillan MP:

Rt Hon Cheryl Gillan MP was appointed on Saturday 5 November as the President of the Buckinghamshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

Speaking at the AGM at Claydon House, Buckinghamshire, Cheryl Gillan said she was honoured to be following in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Verney as honorary president.

Dr Stan Jones, CPRE Bucks Chair, said: “ We are delighted to welcome Mrs Gillan as our new President and look forward to working with her to promote, protect and enhance our local countryside.”

In a wide-ranging speech, the Chesham & Amersham MP said that all environmental damage was basically man-made, but there were mitigations for which she had fought throughout her Parliamentary career. Beginning with her maiden speech in 1992, which was about the Rio Earth Summit that year, the environment has always been important to Mrs Gillan.

“ Since then we have had many advances, with the climate change protocols agreed in Paris last year coming into force this month,” said the MP.

Locally Cheryl Gillan has always been a staunch campaigner to protect the Chilterns environment. She spoke about building and planning, water and air pollution, with the impact of major infrastructure projects like HS2 and Heathrow. “ The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty needs our active involvement to ensure it is kept safe,” she said. “ There are magnificent areas like ancient woodlands and our chalk streams, where we have two out of only 210, not in this country, but in the entire world.”

Cheryl Gillan MP concluded:  “We cannot fully protect the environment, but we will never give up trying.”
