Why is shopping locally important?

It is undoubtedly a great way to create a sense of community. There is no better feeling than being a regular at your local farm shop, over time the shop keeper may know you by name and can recommend upcoming products that may be of interest. Farm shops often let you try small tasters of cheese etc. before you purchase or recommend products that

compliment each other. This style of food shopping definitely offers a more personal touch. Shop owners with enough notice can occasionally order things in for you especially i.e. a specific cut of meet for a large family gathering.

Farm shops rely on our custom to keep running so by purchasing some of your fresh produce through your local farm shop will support that small business and keep local economy thriving. Supporting local jobs.

Another advantage of farm shop produce is that it is often fresher than supermarket food, as it is produced locally and sold soon after harvest. Supermarkets often sell produce that has been picked early to withstand long transportation times. They often use preservation techniques such as refrigeration, freezing, or gas treatments to extend the shelf life of the produce. Not something you have to worry about if it has been picked or produced just up the road from your house.

For that extra guaranteed freshness, why not pop into one of Buck’s ‘pick your own’ farms. There are farms in Maidenhead, Buckingham, Iver, Great Missenden, Milton Keynes and Aylesbury.

What are the must haves from your local farm shop or market…

Fruit and vegetables: Grab some locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, that are high-quality and super fresh.

Meat: Farm shops often sell locally sourced meat which is often more naturally and ethically reared.

Dairy products: They often sell a range of tasty dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, often produced on the nearest dairy farm.

Bakery items: You can’t beat freshly baked bread, pastries or cakes still warm out of the oven from your local farm shop. Usually hand decorated and has the homemade feel.

Jams, chutneys, and other preserves: Many farm shops sell a range of preserves made from locally sourced berries, especially popular with customers looking for more unique products and flavours.

We also can’t ignore the fact that shorter transport times also means fewer greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to improving our carbon footprint.

So next time you’re popping out for veggies, please consider stopping by one of the lovely shops listed below. Fresh from the farm to your table, what’s not to love. 🥦🥕🧅
